Kawara-Manju
Japanese notation "瓦まんじゅう"
”Kawara-Manju” by Kamenoi Kameido Honke, a long-established shop in Kobe with a history of more than 140 years, is made of sponge cake dough wrapped in a koshi-an (sweet red bean paste) filling.
The design is modeled after the eaves round tiles used in Japanese temples and other buildings.
There seem to be versions with crests of hollyhock, tomoe, maple, chrysanthemum, katakure, and mokuryu. The manju I bought this time is the Tomoe mark.
From the side, the sponge cake dough is voluminous and already looks delicious.
When you crack open the filling, you will see that it is filled tightly with Koshi-an (sweet red bean paste). The fineness of the Koshi-an can be felt even from the appearance.
Delicious! The balance between the delicious sponge cake crust and the elegant sweet bean paste is perfect. As expected from a long-established shop, the taste is perfect.
