Shikoku's traditional tart includes chestnuts!

“Hatada Kuri Tart” made by Hatada Honpo in Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture, is a famous confectionary in Shikoku.  It includes chestnuts in the tart. The confectioner has many stores in the Shikoku region.

The package also says “Shikoku’s famous confectionery. Incidentally, Hatada Honpo is also famous for their salted butter dorayaki, a bean jam pancake,  called “Doraichi“.

In the early Edo period (1603-1867), Sadayuki Matsudaira, the lord of the Matsuyama domain, was fascinated by a sponge cake rolled with jam which was brought through the Nanban trade.  He had confectioners made into the similar sweets using yuzu, a familiar citrus fruit. That is allegedly said it was the beginning of producing tart sweets in the Shikoku region.

Cut chestnuts are filled in Koshi-an, sweet bean paste, with a slight aroma of yuzu, Japanese citron.

Chestnut nuts make accentuate for the classic taste of Shikoku’s famous “tart”. The aroma from yuzu (Japanese citron), the light red bean paste, the fluffy sponge cake, and the chestnut nuts combine to create a delicious, stable taste.
