Beta Choco

Opened roll with coated chocolate

“Beta Choco” made by Taiyo Pan in Higashioki-gun, Yamagata Prefecture, is a local sweet bread that has been loved since 1964, the year of the Tokyo Olympics.

I think naming Beta Choco comes from the process how it is made. It is cut in half horizontally, open it and coat it with sticky chocolate on both faces.

The both opened sides of the roll is evenly coated with chocolate, and the coated area is so large.  It looks like there is a chocolate bar on each side.

It is easy to divide it in half vertically. The cream is spread between the chocolate and the roll. It looks like a giant “eclair”.

The bread is fluffy, the chocolate is crispy, and the texture is lighter than expected. However, it is sweet enough and this is the way to go as the sweet bread. Then the big size also makes us satisfied. It is understandable why it has been popular in Yamagata Prefecture for so long.
