Hakodate-Sampo
Japanese notation "函館散歩"
Hakodate Senjuan Sohonke’s “Hakodate-Sampo” is a manju with Goryokaku (Goryokaku Wall) decorated on the sponge cake dough. The surface of the manju reflects famous Hakodate landmarks on the manju, making it the perfect Hakodate souvenir.
The shape and design of this round, conical manju may look like a yo-yo, but it is a delicious-looking sponge cake dough manju that is baked to a golden brown and fluffy texture.
When split in half, it is filled with a well-balanced filling of koshi-an (sweet red bean paste) carefully kneaded from azuki beans produced in Tokachi, Hokkaido. The “Hakodate-Sampo” sponge cake dough has a slight buttery flavor, giving it a distinctly Hokkaido taste.
The sweetness of the koshi-an (sweet bean paste) is refreshing and fragrant, and the castella dough is delicious. The castella buns had a natural sweetness that showed the quality of milk, eggs, and butter unique to Hokkaido.
