YokohamaHarbor (double marron)
Japanese notation "横浜ハーバー(ダブルマロン)"
I bought “Yokohama Harbor,” a confectionary so famous that it is one of the most popular Yokohama souvenirs. This confectionary is a classic marron cake with a history of about 60 years since its birth.
This is an original illustration by Ryohei Yanagihara, who is also known as the creator of “Uncle Tris,” as you may be familiar with the Tris Whiskey character. It is said that Ryohei Yanagihara was an incomparable ship enthusiast, and he was the perfect person to design the package for Yokohama Harbor.
A cake in the shape of a ship. The outer layer of the cake, which is baked to a golden brown, has the texture of a manjuu (a Japanese sweet made of bean-jam buns), giving it a retro look.
The outside has the texture of baked cake dough, and inside is chestnut red bean paste with chestnuts inside. It looks like a Western-style confectionary, but it also has the texture of Japanese chestnuts with the simple flavor of chestnuts.
The chestnut red bean paste wrapped in the moist texture of sponge cake dough is fluffy and deliciously stable. As the name “double marron” suggests, both the inside and outside of the pastry are full of chestnut flavor. The taste never gets old, and I felt once again that it is indeed synonymous with Yokohama souvenir confections.
