Yaki-Castella (butter)
like a freeze-dried texture and enjoyable as castella taste
Nihonbashiya Chobei is a Japanese confectionery shop, their main shop located across the street from Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi in Tokyo. While they make many traditional Japanese sweets, the “Yaki-Castella”, baked castella has a unique texture—it feels like a sweet that blends tradition with modernity.

This is made by soaking castella cake in butter and then baking it. The package looks Japanese style and is reasonable to buy by a single slice at 100 yen.

It feels like freeze-dried castella and has a texture similar to rusks. It seems to have just a hint of salt sprinkled on it.

It seems to have a crumblier texture than rusks and is baked with buttercream soaked into the dough.

It has a light, crisp texture, and the flavor is just like castella—it’s delicious. It’s great that we can buy these for as little as 100 yen each.
