Siberia
Japanese notation "シベリア"
“Muraoka-Sohonpo” is located in Ogi City, Saga Prefecture. Founded in 1899, “Muraoka-Sohonpo” is a very long-established Japanese confectionery shop famous for “Ogi Yokan,” which has a long history dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868).
This time, I got another signature product “Siberia” made by “Muraoka-Sohonpo”, a long-established yokan shop.
“Siberia” itself is recognized throughout Japan as a traditional confectionary that combines sponge cake dough and yokan (bean jelly), but there are various theories about its origin, and the details are not well known.
Personally, I was struck by the design of the packaging of Muraoka Sohonpo’s “Siberia,” which has an excellent atmosphere.
When opened, the Siberia appears guarded by a cardboard box. It is quite voluminous and massive.
I thought that what was sandwiched in the middle was simply “Yokan”, but upon closer inspection, I realized that there were three layers, each consisting of soft azuki bean paste and “Yokan”.
One bite and you’ll be amazed at how delicious it is, a perfect combination of a layer of red bean paste, a layer of yokan, and a layer of sponge cake on both sides. There are many sweets with the name “Siberia” but I felt that the Siberia made by “Muraoka Sohonpo” is by far the best.
