Hamaguri-Monaka-Cookie

Popular sweets from Kesennuma

Koyama Confectionery in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, is a long-established confectionery with a history of more than 130 years since its establishment in the Meiji era. The “Hamaguri-Monaka-Cookie” that Koyama Confectionery began making in the middle of the Showa period (1926-1989) is a popular souvenir from Kesennuma.

The cookie dough is poured into a clam-shaped monaka skin. The clam is considered a good-luck charm because its two shells overlap each other perfectly, signifying “Conjugal bliss”, In Miyagi Prefecture, clams are often used for weddings and other celebratory occasions.

The monaka dough is chewy, and the cookie dough sits nicely.

The texture of the monaka skin and the crunchy cookie are unique textures.
