Kamakura-Hangetsu

A large half-moon shaped Japanese gaufrette

“Kamakura Goro Honten” in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, is a confectionery shop with its main store on Komachi Street leading to Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine. Their signature product, “Kamakura-Hangetsu” is a major souvenir often seen in Kamakura.

The package is adorable with a rabbit peeking out from the half-moon.

It looks like a gaufrette with “ogura” and “matcha” cream sandwiched in between. It has a half-moon shape and is quite large.

When I measured it, it was about 15 cm long. This is an amazing size for a single cream sandwich.

The azuki flavor is a light azuki color mixed with whipped cream and has a fluffy texture.

The matcha flavor is also beautifully colored with matcha mixed into the whipped cream.

The rice crackers are crispy with a firm, chewy texture. The cream is soft and fluffy, and the difference in texture is exquisite. This sandwich is perhaps a Japanese-style gaufrette, with the flavors of red beans and green tea. It is a satisfying and voluminous piece of pastry.
