Aka-Momiji
Japanese notation "赤もみじ(やまだ屋)"
Yamadaya, a long-established ”Momiji-Manju” shop established in Miyajima in 1932, has produced many variations of momiji-manju over its long history. The “Aka Momiji” I bought this time is one of the many Momiji-Manju lineup of Yamadaya.
Although the name “Aka-Momiji” is rather austere, the package design is quite catchy, with an illustration of a strawberry.
From the outside, there is no hint of strawberry at all, but as a lover of momiji manju, I am a little happy just to see this orthodox shape.
When split in half, a bright red bean paste appeared. This “strawberry red bean paste” was made from summer and autumn strawberries grown in Hiroshima Prefecture. I am sure this is made by kneading strawberries into the white bean paste, but I have never seen such a vivid red bean paste before.
The sweet and sour taste of the strawberries and the sweetness of the red bean paste were unique and distinctive.
