Fukure-Gashi
Japanese notation "ふくれ菓⼦"
“Fukure-Gashi” made by Maruhachi Confectionery.”Fukuregashi” is a snack from southern Kyushu, including Miyazaki and Kagoshima. It is a confection that all generations, regardless of age or gender, have been familiar with since they were small children, and it has become a famous local confection.
There seems to be a historical background as to why “Fukure-Gashi” has become so familiar to people. In the area of Kagoshima Prefecture that used to be the Satsuma Domain, the Satsuma Domain had a monopoly on the production of sugarcane, which was flourishing in the Ryukyu and Amami regions, and the distribution of brown sugar was very active and widely available to the general public as the domain’s source of revenue. Therefore, it is said that simple “Fukure-Gashi” (sweet made from brown sugar) became popular among the general public.
I have made steamed bread at home in the past, but it is fluffier and fluffier than that. Moreover, it looks delicious with a slightly firmer texture.
The soft sweetness of the brown sugar spreads throughout the dough in a well-balanced manner, and the dough itself has a simple taste, but is moist and fluffy, in other words, a “Japanese sponge cake”. I felt the quality that has been cultivated over a long tradition.
