The chestnut groves of Obuse, once part of the shogunate's direct holdings

Kurian Fumido locates in Obuse Town, Nagano Prefecture, is a long-established Japanese confectionery shop over 150 years. founded in 1864 (the first year of the Genji era). As the confectioner’s name says, they specializes in sweets made with chestnuts.

The Obuse region in Nagano Prefecture has long been famous for their chestnuts, particularly the “Obuse Chestnut,” which was even presented to the shogun’s family during the Edo period. It’s said that part of the chestnut groves was managed by direct shogunate territory (tenryo).

The sweet is warpped in golden foil once unpack the package.

A castella spong cake is packed in the foil and is backed to a rich match green color.

A bunch of smooth red bean paste and candied chestnuts are wrapped in the match castella cake.

The rich matcha castella cake, with its hint of bitterness, perfectly complements the smooth red bean paste and Obuse chestnuts. It’s a confection that lets us feel the history of the Obuse region.
