Karukan

I feel the stability of a long-established traditional company.

“Kyumenya” located in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, is a long-established confectionery shop that has been producing Satsuma’s famous sweets since 1930. “Karukan” is the first name that comes to mind when talking about Satsuma’s famous sweets.

There are many confectioners in Kagoshima Prefecture that make “karukan”, and Kyumenya’s karukan is also made with local ingredients, such as rice flour from Kagoshima and salt from the deep sea water of Yoron Island.

“Karukan” is made with plenty of yam and steamed with plenty of air. Even though yam is the main ingredient, the moist, spongy texture is a testament to the wisdom of our ancestors and the tradition of ingenuity.

Inside is a sweet bean paste, which contrasts beautifully with the pure white karukan dough.

Made with natural ingredients, this naturally sweet treat is a timeless classic.
