Jaga-Pokkuru

Once you try it, you will never forget the texture.

“Jaga-Pokkuru” produced at the “Calbee Hokkaido Factory” in Chitose City, Hokkaido, is a very popular souvenir snack known not only in Hokkaido but throughout Japan. It is a French fry-like confectionary with an original texture made using a unique manufacturing process. I remember well how shockingly delicious it was the first time I tasted it.

The name “Jaga-Pokkuru” is derived from the word “Koro-pokkuru,” which is a word of the Ainu tribe. “Koro-pokkuru” is said to be a legend that it is a fairy that brings happiness.

It looks completely like French fries. The secret of their deliciousness lies in the fact that they are cut whole with the skin to preserve the flavor components and are made with Okhotsk salt (made by slowly boiling seawater from the brackish waters of Lake Saroma in a cauldron to produce salt).

It is crispy but also has the crunchiness of potatoes. I have eaten “Jaga-Pokkuru” many times, which impresses me with its unparalleled texture and potato feel, but it is still delicious every time.
