Honke Nishio Yatsuhashi

Popular beyond the seas, Kyoto's famous sweets representing Japan

“Honke Nishio-Yatsuhashi ” in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, is famous as a very long-established Yatsuhashi shop, along with “Shōgoin-Yatsuhashi“.

“Honke Nishio-Yatsuhashi” was founded in 1689, the same year as Shogoin Yatsuhashi Honten. “Shōgoin-Yatsuhashi” is derived from the shape of a koto, while “Honke Nishio-Yatsuhashi” is derived from the shape of a plate of Yatsuhashi at Yatsuhashi in Mikawa Province, the setting of “Kakitsubata” depicted in “Ise Monogatari“.

They are very similar in shape and size. I wonder how it tastes..

I felt that the aroma of Nikki (cinnamon) was more subdued at “Honke Yatsuhashi Nishio”, but the more I chewed, the more the Nikki spread, and I thought it might be the difference in the amount of Nikki contained in the dough, but I do not know the details. Both were delicious, and I could tell that it was the original flavor that has kept the tradition alive.
