Yama-Uni-Mame
Japanese notation "山うに豆"
“Yama-uni” is a traditional spice from Kawada area in the eastern part of Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, and is made from yuzu (a citrus fruit), fukumi-pepper (red nanba), hawk’s claw, and salt.
“Yama-Uni-Mame” made by Echizen-tai, a company that produces a variety of foods using this spice “Yama-Uni”.
Unique package design showing a man with eyeglasses, that is a symbol products of Sabae city, whose market share beyond 90%.in Japan in the industory,
Red-colored fava beans appeared. Many red dots chili peppers are visible on the fava beans,
This reminds me sea urchin-flavored fava beans called “Uni-mame” , but this is called “Yama-Uni-Mame” and have a different flavor. The size of the fava beans also seems to be larger than the other and it is quite different view having dots red peppter..
The crispy fried fava beans are very matched the Yama-uni spice.
The fava beans have a mild and rich flavor, and the chili pepper adds a spiciness that gives it a delicacy-like taste. It goes well with beer, shochu, or other alcoholic beverages. It will be a good Fukui souvenir for our friends who likes drinking.
