Kaki-Ame (Oyster candy)
Japanese notation "石巻銘産 かきあめ"
”Kaki-Ame” a candy that has been loved in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture for nearly 100 years, was a candy whose production ceased after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, but was recreated and revived in 2018 by Mitsuharu Ishikawa, who runs a coffee business in the city.
“Oyster candy” has been made in Ishinomaki City since the early Taisho period (1912-1926) and contains real oyster extract. I had never heard of this candy using oysters instead of persimmons, but it is amazing. It is also amazing that it has a history of nearly 100 years.
The package design also has a nice retro yet modern color scheme with an illustration of an oyster.
It has a beautiful color like a jewel. This is a simple question, but what color is oyster extract? If this brownish color is the color of “oyster extract” it is truly a jewel of the sea. I am still a little nervous about putting the oyster candy in my mouth, wondering what it tastes like.
Delicious. It has the flavor of oysters, but before that, it has a rich sweetness, with a faint aroma of oysters.
A small amount of salt also enhances the sweetness.
