Homura-Tatsu Senbei
Japanese notation "炎立つせんべい"
“Homura-Tatsu Senbei” made by Sasamori Confectionery in Kakuda City, Miyagi Prefecture, are so-called “Waffel” sweets, which are Japanese-style cookies with cream in between.
The “Homura-Tatsu (Flames Rising)” is an NHK historical drama that was broadcast in the 1990’s. It depicts the rise and fall of the Oshu Fujiwara clan. The drama depicted the rise and fall of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, and was set in the area where the once prosperous Oshu Fujiwara clan ruled.
Cream is sandwiched between thick, hard-baked waffle dough. The “Sasamori” website describes it as a “sable-like rice cracker,” but it is hard to imagine it as a “rice cracker” from its appearance. It looks more like a delicious Western-style confectionery.
I bought the vanilla cream one this time, but they also have another one with green tea cream.
Despite the Japanese name, it is a Western-style confectionery that goes well with coffee. It is interesting to see sweets that are associated with episodes rooted in the history of the region.
