Mito-no-Ume

Potential of Ume & Shiso Leaves (Perilla leaves)

“Mito-no-Ume” made by “Kame-jirushi” a very long-established store established in 1852 in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, has been Kame-jirushi’s signature product and a well-known confectionary in Mito for a long time.

“Mito-no-Ume” is a traditional confectionery made of red shiso wrapped in soft Gyuhi (rice cake), and is said to be inspired by the plum blossoms of Kairaku-en, one of Mito City’s most famous landmarks.

Underneath the thin perilla leaves, a beautiful cross-section of white bean paste wrapped in Gyuhi (rice cake) can be seen.

Beautiful cross section and mellow aroma of ume vinegar.

Delicious! This confectionary has won the Gold Award three times at the National Confectionary Exposition. Perilla leaves are delicious whether used for cooking or for sweets.
