The “Hato-Sablé” made by Toshimaya in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, is so famous throughout Japan that it is easy to forget that it is a confectionery that originated in Kamakura.
Every Japanese person has probably had one of these before. It is a sublet that boasts of its unmistakable taste.
The history of Hato Sablé dates back to the Meiji Era(1868 – 1912).
A large, thick sablefish made with lots of fresh butter. Since I was a child, every time I saw that yellow tin, I thought, “What a luxurious cookies!” If I received it as a gift, I would feel a little respect for my aunt or relative.
I have always felt very happy with just one of these. They are the pride of Japanese confectionery.
