Kokutou donut-sticks
Japanese notation "黒糖ドーナツ棒"
“Kokutou(Brown Sugar) donut-sticks” are made by Fujibambi in Kumamoto Prefecture. In the early days of the company, Fujibambi specialized in producing “Karinto” but in 1987, they created “Kokutou donut-sticks” and since then, it has been a familiar standard confectionary for more than 30 years.
The back of the box of three I bought had an illustration of “Kumamon” and some trivia about Kumamoto Castle.
The individual stick-type packages make it easy to eat.
It looks like a small fried bread. It looks quite hard, but not hard enough to be a “Karinto” a kind of deep-fried doughnut.
When you break it in two, you can clearly see that the fried donut is soaked in blackstrap molasses.
It is sweetened with a generous amount of brown sugar, and is quite a sweet doughnut. It is a biscuit-like snack that can be eaten quickly.
