Olandasenbei

A Rice cracker ? A snack with unique texture of the dough in Nemuro

“Olandasenbei” meaning Netherlands rice cracker is made by Hashiya confectionery in Nemuro city, Hokkaido.  The confectionary has made and sold since 1965 and it has been loved for long time there. Naming senbei, rice cracker sounds a little different from its real texture. This is very unique.

The size is surprisingly big and the texture is distinctive other than rice cracker.  It is addicted springy texture as written on the package.

An illustration is printed on the package showing where Nemuro city is.  It locates at the east coast border in Hokkaido.

The diameter is about 14 cm, the size is like a Frisbee.

It looks like a waffle.

As mentioned above, the texture is springy and sticky dough so that it is necessary to tear off while we want to break it in half.

It tastes light sweetness of black sugar in the dough, and its texture is like between a waffle and Nuresenbei, soft rice cracker. Anyway it is spingy and quite difficult to tear off in half.  The dough texture is unique.. It is also good for a breakfast with coffee.  This is a traditional confectionary in Nemuro.
