Saigo-Senbei
Japanese notation "西郷せんべい"
I bought a “Saigo Senbei” made by Bundan-do in Aira City, Kagoshima Prefecture. This cracker is characterized by its surprisingly big size.
Saigo Takamori was apparently 180 cm tall, much taller than the average height of Japanese people at that time. It is well known that he was well-dressed and of large build. This “Saigo Senbei” is a big size cracker with a motif of Saigo-Don, and the package contains two large crackers, making it a dynamic snack.
It is about 16 cm long, and looks like this when compared to a 500 yen coin. It is so large that it overturns the general concept of crackers.
It is like a crispy cracker with a simple sweetness, made with simple ingredients.
It has a gentle, rustic sweetness with the flavor of eggs and flour. It goes well with coffee. Saigo Senbei” is a unique rice cracker that is quite popular as a Kagoshima souvenir.
