Mochi-maroon
Japanese notation "餅栗(もちまろん)"
Yamadaya, a long-established confectionery founded in 1932 in Miyajima, Hiroshima Prefecture. They are famous for Momiji manju, steamed sweet bun shaped like a maple leaf, and they also make various type of sweet bun. One of them is a chestnut manju, called “Mochi Maroon.
Seeing the package design, it seems to be from the same series as the “Mochi Zunda” I bought the other day.
The confection looks like one of their products series, “Toh-yo-ka“, which is their famous representative confectionery. The filling inside has different variations among the series.
The springy dough of the 「Toh-yo-ka」 has been preserved, and it is filled with yellow chestnut red bean paste.
Using glutinous rice flour for the dough is the most distinctive feature. The thin texture of dough is the reason for its exquisite flavor, which mixes well with the red bean paste inside. It is like a springy pancake texture and the combination with maroon paste gives slightly Western taste.
