Kuri-bayashi

Wrapped sweet bun in pie dough wrapping a whole chestnut

Kagiya Confectionery was founded in 1933 in Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture, who has continuously made a variety of confections, including “Kuri-bayashi” a pastry wrapping chestnuts in the pie crust.  It is their best seller among the products.

Konjikido (Golden Hall) of Chuson-ji Temple in Hiraizumi, Ohshu is printed on the package. The golden colored package looks gorgeous. Konjikido can be seen through a forest of chestnuts on the package. There are perhaps many chestnut trees in the temple grounds. I have been there once, but I did not notice that.

The manju, sweet bun is wrapped with pie dough, and it is quite heavy.

Looking it at the cross section, an large chestnut is wrapped with white pasted bean jam, and then pie crust and finally baked.

It is as if you are eating a whole chestnut. The chestnuts are boiled sweetly and go well with the simple sweet white pasted bean jam and pie crust.
