Poppen-yaki
Japanese notation "ぽっぺんやき"
“Poppen-yaki” made by “Sweets KAWATA” in Isahaya City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is a confectionery, texture is like a soft cookie.
The “Poppen” in “Poppen-yaki” refer to the making sounds when blowing into the glass to make ”Vidoro”, a traditional Nagasaki glass art. The illustration on the package is reminiscent of a famous painting by Utamaro Kitagawa, an Ukiyo-e artist in the Edo period.
It looks like a flat rice cracker, but has the aroma of milk.
The dough is crunchy on the outside and moist inside. It is hard to see white chocolate sandwiched inside.
The milk flavor in both the dough and white milk chocolate can be felt in abundance. It is a confectionery which gives the impression of “Nanban sweets” unique to Nagasaki.
