Dojō-sukui Manju
Japanese notation "どじょう掬いまんじゅう"
“Dojō-sukui Manju” made by Nakaura Foods in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, is a very famous souvenir from the San’in region.
It is made in the motif of a “Hyottoko” mask used in the “Dojō-sukui Odori” dance to the tune of Yasugibushi, and a polka-dot patterned tenugui (hand towel) worn over the head.
This unique appearance is probably the reason for its popularity as a souvenir, and although it was first sold in 1967, it is still popular today, more than 50 years later.
The inside is filled with white bean paste. This combination reminds me a little of the “Meika-Hiyoko“, but I personally love this type of manju skin. It has a sponge cake-like flavor and goes well with coffee.
The smooth white bean paste and egg-flavored manju skin are delicious, just like a classic. With its cute appearance, this product is sure to be a welcome souvenir from the San’in region.
