Usu-kurenai

Mellow sweetness and tartness of Kou-gyoku apple

Founded in 1918 in Shinmachi, Aomori City “Okina-ya” is famous for making Japanese sweets that make the most of Aomori apples. Among the sweets made by Okina-ya “Usu-kurenai” is famous as a representative confectionary.

The “kou-gyoku” apple which is actively grown in Aomori Prefecture, is used to make this candy, which is made by boiling apple slices in sugar and slowly drying them, a process known as “glace” overseas.

Sliced apples look like dried fruit in their original form. The surface is sprinkled with powdered sugar. The skin of the apple remains firmly on the outside.

Looking at the cross section, we can see more clearly that it is the apple fruit as it is. The pulp soaked in sugar is slightly transparent.

The aroma of kou-gyoku apple is mellow and the taste is moderately sour. The white powdered sugar around it is slightly sweet and very elegant. It had a natural flavor that explain why it has been loved for so long.
