Cream-Momiji

No longer the standard cream flavor, even in Momiji-manju.

Founded in 1932 on Miyajima Island in Hiroshima Prefecture, “Yamadaya” is a long-established maker of Momiji-manju, and produces a great many variations. The “Cream Momiji” I bought this time is a version with cream instead of Ogura-an (sweet bean paste).

The packaging is also designed in yellow, which is intuitively recognizable as containing cream bean paste.

Of course, it looks like an ordinary momiji manju, but it is,,

When split in half, it is filled with custard cream, as shown here.

Cream in place of Ogura-an (sweet bean paste) is no longer a standard item, such as Taiyaki and Imagawa-yaki, but it really is a combination that goes well with castella dough.
