Unagi-pie
Japanese notation "うなぎパイ ミニ"
The “Unagi-pie” made by Shunkado in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a nationally famous confectionary. It was invented in 1961 to turn Hamamatsu’s specialty “eel” into a confectionary. Eels, rich in vitamin A, are said to be effective in restoring energy, combating summer fatigue, and preserving eyesight.
The package reads “Hamanako’s specialty, nighttime snacks”. They named it “Yoru no Okashi” (evening confectionery) to represent the time when a busy family gathers together for dinner, because they think it is important to have a time to gather together for dinner.
It is small enough to be eaten in two bites, and its golden brown color looks delicious.
The entire pie is covered with honey. It also contains almonds, peanuts, and white sesame seeds, which enhance the savory flavor.
It has been handmade by artisans since its birth in 1961. The pie is still loved throughout Japan for its uniqueness and the idea of using eel extract in a confectionery.
