Shimonita Negi Senbei
Japanese notation "下仁田ねぎせんべい"
”Ote Seika” which makes “Shimonita Negi Senbei” in Annaka City, Gunma Prefecture, is a very long-established rice cracker shop founded in 1862.
It contains many mini-sized rice crackers with plenty of Shimonita Negi (leeks) kneaded into the dough. The package label also appeals to the green onion.
Shimonita Negi is a variety grown around the town of Kanra-Gun, Gunma Prefecture, and is characterized by growing into a very thick and short shape. It is also called “Tonosama Negi” (Lord’s green onion) because it was presented to the shogun of Edo during the Edo period (1603-1868), and is a specialty of Gunma. These Shimonita Negi (leeks) are lavishly kneaded into these thin mini rice crackers.
The green onion spots visible in the dough, each piece is about this size, really a bite-sized mini rice cracker.
It is thinly baked and has a light, crispy texture, with a strong flavor of Shimonita Negi. It is of course delicious as a snack, but it was also a perfect accompaniment to beer.
