Kame-no-Monaka
Japanese notation "亀の最中"
”Kameya” is a traditional Japanese confectionery located in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture, and has been in business for 230 years. “Kame-no-Monaka” is their signature product and is especially popular. Kameya, which has been in business since the Edo period, continues to make new products while preserving tradition.
This “Kame-no-Monaka” was first made in 1927 and became a signature product. The package depicts a turtle, a symbol of longevity in Japan.
The turtle-shell shaped monaka can be eaten in two bites. The monaka itself also has the turtle symbol.
The skin of the dough is soft and thin, and the sweet bean paste is elegantly sweet with the flavor of azuki beans.
Incidentally, the shell of a tortoise resembles the shape of money, such as a “koban”, and is said to bring good luck in money. Sweets with the lucky turtle as a symbol are ideal as souvenirs.
