Masu Masu Monaka
Japanese notation "斗升最中"
Taneya is now a nationally famous wagashi shop, but its origins date back to 1872 in Omihachiman, Shiga Prefecture. While inheriting the tradition, the company has created many new wagashi, making it a “prestigious” group in the wagashi world. This time, I bought “Masu Masu Monaka” from Taneya.
The name is based on the traditional Japanese unit of measure “〼(Masu)”. The monaka is made in the shape of a square wooden measuring stick for measuring the amount of water, rice, etc.
A square monaka with diagonal lines.” The word “Taneya” is also engraved on it. The design of the monaka is also stylish, as it is made to resemble a “〼(Masu)” holder.
There are two kinds of red bean paste, neatly divided diagonally. They appear to be azuki bean paste and yuzu bean paste. The yuzu bean paste is very fragrant and has a fresh citrus aroma.
Monaka with yuzu bean paste is also very tasty. The refreshing sweetness of the yuzu bean paste matched well with the crispy monaka skin, making us nod our heads in agreement.
