Kuri-Pie
Japanese notation "栗パイ"
I bought a “Kuri (Chestnut) Pie” from “Furyudō” a very old shop established in 1890 in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, that has been making traditional confections, mainly Japanese sweets, for more than 130 years.
The package design is quite pop and cute.
When opened, it looks somewhat like a cream puff, but it has a heavy weight. It is quite rare to find a pie pastry that looks like such a round ball.
Looking at the cross section, the chestnuts are trapped inside the pie without any gaps.
It seems that Japanese chestnuts with astringent skin are covered with a thin layer of white bean paste, which is then surrounded by a pie and baked. The chestnuts are still large!
The Japanese chestnuts are hunky and sweetly seasoned and go well with the pie crust. Chestnuts and white bean paste have a Japanese-style flavor, yet go well with the pie crust. The taste is simple and sweet, yet luxurious.
