Izumiya, a confectionery shop in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture, was founded in Saku-daira, which once prospered as a strategic location on the Nakasendō Highway, and has long been a favorite of the local people. The “Koi-Guruma” made by Izumiya is a cute sponge cake bun shaped like two carp swimming close together.

The shape of a koi carp is well represented, and although miniature in size, it is a shape that gives a sense of dignity. The scales and fins are also well drawn.

Each of the two Koi has a different flavor and comes in a set of Ogura-an (sweet bean paste) and custard cream.

The custard one is also a classic delicacy; it is a delightful snack to enjoy two different kinds of flavors. Incidentally, Saku City raises a brand of edible carp called “Saku-Goi” and is said to be a nationally famous producer.
