Ganso Momiji-manju

The original Momiji manju, with twists and turns and drama, made a comeback in 2009

Takatsudo in Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, is known as the originator of the famous Momiji-manju, a steamed bun shaped like a maple leaf that is representative of Hiroshima Prefecture. The birth of this Momiji manju dates back to 1906, when the original “Momijigata Yaki Manju” was created by the founder, Takatsu Tsunenosuke.

Later, it became famous as a popular confectionery in Hiroshima Prefecture, but the second generation who took over the store quit making Momiji manju because he could not reproduce the same taste as the first generation. He was very stoic.

After some time passed, the third generation’s desire to make momiji manju led to the revival of their momiji manju in July 2009. Their momiji manju seems to have a very elaborate and realistic of maple shape compared to those generally known, and they are baked in the same mold that has been used since the first generation.

Thus, Momiji manju, the original but once-closed production, was revived in 2009 and continues to the present day, that is a pretty dramatic history.

The bouncy dough and the light azuki red bean paste make it an authentic taste.  This is the original momiji manju. The historical package is also a nice touch, and the “original Momiji manju” is a perfect souvenir of Hiroshima.
