Sugu-lemon

impressed at the work of a traditional Japanese confectionery shop indeed!

Funawa, a long-established Japanese confectionery and sweet store in Asakusa, Tokyo, is famous for their “Imoyokan” , sweet potato dumpling.

“Sugu-lemon” is their another line-up, a lemon-flavored baked sweets.

They were founded in 1902, and their sweet potato yokan is so famous as a souvenir from Asakusa, and I was surprised to learn that they make such a modern lemon baked sweet.

The shape of the lemon is faithfully reproduced in both color and shape.

The outside dough has a biscuit-like texture with a slight lemon flavor, and white bean paste mixed with lemon peel is fully filled inside.

At first glance, it looks like a Western-style confectionary, but Funawa has created a Japanese-style confectionary taste with a hint of lemon flavor. It is like an elegant lemon-flavored manju, a sweet bun. By the way, I think the name of the confectionery “Sugu-lemon” is a play on the word “Superior”. It is just like “Sugure-mono”.
