Beco-mochi
Japanese notation "べこ餅"
I bought “Beco-mochi” made by Nissei Bakery locates in Hokkaidoh
“Beco-mochi”, a rice cake is usually made two colors of rice cake, white and black stuck tegether, and the color combination reminds us a cow’s body. Thus the confectionary name “Beco” means cow in the Hokkaidoh dialect.
The shape resembles leaves of a tree. It is allegedly said that Yamagata Prefecture is the cradle of “Kujira-mochi” and it was evolved into its own unique version and made it their original in Hokkaido, however, that exact roots is still not sure in many respects
Anyway, it is a simple rice cake, and brown sugar is used on the black side and the mixesd of white & black part is delicious. Seeing inside cut in half, it has two layers of the rice cake.
Personally, I am a sucker for such simple sweet rice cake. It is a universal delicacy that I can understand the reason why it has been popular for so long.
