Kokutou-manju
Japanese notation "黒糖饅頭 (丸屋本店)"
I was looking forward to buying “Kokutou-manju(brown sugar buns)” from Maruya Honten, a very long-established confectioner established in Niigata City in 1878, as they are a popular product of a confectionery shop with a history of over 140 years.
It is shiny and transparent and looks amazing. It looks like a standard manjuu shape. The texture of the dough is unique.
Looking at the cross section, you can see that it is filled with a generous round of koshian (sweet bean paste). The outer manju dough is kneaded with brown sugar and has a brownish hue, but it is transparent enough to feel fresh.
The soft sweetness of brown sugar is delicious. The koshian has a refreshing taste and the manju dough is chewy. As expected from a traditional Japanese confectionery shop, the quality of the manju was very high.
