Kujū-kushima Senpei

Sasebo's famous confectionery with a unique and addictive texture

“Kujū-kushima Senpei” a famous confectionery from Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is a rice cracker featuring the islands of northwestern Nagasaki Prefecture, including Kujū-kushima.

The word “Kujū-ku(Number 99 in Japanese)” means “too many to count” and refers to the archipelago of islands off the western coast of the Kitamatsuura Peninsula.

The package features an illustration of “a girl with a western umbrella” by Kiyoshi Nakajima.

When opened, the hexagonal rice cracker has “Kujū-kushima” written in clear white letters.

The letters of the decoration are made of a sugary confectionery-like material, surely the way you would decorate an icing cookie.

When split in half, it has a crispy texture. The peanuts dotted around the cake are said to resemble the islands of the Kujuku Islands.
