Yoitomake

Tomakomai's famous Haskap Jam confectionery

Tomakomai’s famous confectionery, “Yoitomake” produced by Mitsuboshi, a confectionery in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido, is a roll cake confectionery made with plenty of haskap jam.

Haskap (Lonicera caerulea) is a plant native to Hokkaido, a blackish-purple, sour fruit so nutritious that it is said to be “the fruit of longevity”. The name comes from the Ainu word “hashkap” = (something that grows in abundance on the branches.)

And the name “Yoromake” is derived from the call made when a log is raised and lowered.

The one I bought this time was sliced, but I am sure that the ones sold in the form of long rolls would look like logs, both in color and texture.

The roll cake is also covered with jam, so it is said to be “the hardest souvenir to eat in Japan (lol)” because it gets sticky when eaten with the hands, but I think that is a very catchy sales pitch.

The combination of the sweet and sour taste of the Haskap and the fine roll cake is outstandingly delicious. It is no wonder that it has become a long-selling classic favorite.
