Habutae Monaka
Japanese notation "羽二重もなか"
Matsuokaken locates in Fukui Prefecture is a famous maker of “Habutae-mochi” and this time I bought a “Habutae-monaka” which is a Wafer cake filled with Habutae-mochi and bean jam. Matsuokaken’s Habutae mochi is of course delicious, and I was excited to enjoy the combination with monaka and Habutae mochi.
A red label is printed on the packagesaid “Habutae Monaka” written in black letters, a powerful design and the size is quite cute.
The cute, rounded shape is allegedly said a founder of weaving company, Shigebei Awashima got an hint from raw material, “cocoon” made from silkworms.
When I split the cocoon-shaped monaka in half, “Habutae-mochi” wrapped in bean jam appears, the white mochi looks silk and stands out.
The koshian, strained bean paste (jam) is soft and tender, and the monaka skin is very delicate but luxurious. The Habutae-mochi wrapped in koshian has a silky texture that melts and blends with the whole. I have to hat off to Matsuokaken’s concept of making high level Japanese sweets, and admired the perfection at balance of historical significance and modern creativity.
