Chocolate Monaka Kuge Nikki
Japanese notation "香るショコラ最中 公家日記"
Gion Ninigi-cho, locates in Gion-cho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City, makes “Chocolate Monaka Kuge Nikki” a new type of monaka, a bean jam – filled wafer, which combines chocolate and anko (sweet red bean paste).
The confectionary name, “Kuge Nikki” meaning nobleman’s diary, is used to describe the elegant atmosphere of Heian aristocrats, and a picture of a glossy ox carriage is printed on the package. The design looks like a typical approach done by a confectionery shop in Gion.
A floral pattern is decorated on the wafer skin and the monaka shaped like a compact mirror case.
Looking at the cross section, white cream is wrapped in the red bean paste. The white cream is ganache cream mixed with yuzu, aromatic citron.
The smooth ganache cream with a hint of yuzu and Ogura-an are a unique yet excellent match. Personally, I felt it tastes like mascarpone cheese. The name “Kuge Nikki” and the flavor are a perfect match.
