Aki-no-koromo

Delicate sweetness and the volumy gyuhi are delightful.

Takagi who locates in Hiroshima City is a very long-established Japanese confectionery established in 1919. They make  “Aki no Koromo,” a confection with red bean paste wrapped in thin Gyuhi dough, a confection of a gummy consistency.

The name ”Aki” is the former name of the area where Hiroshima Prefecture is now located. The western area of present Hiroshima was called Aki no Kuni, and the eastern area was called Bingo no Kuni.

Gyuhi is shaped into thin sheet and wrapped around the bean paste, like a woven fabric. The thick gyuhi is quite volumy, and the structure is loved for most gyuhi lovers.

Such delicate construction could be requied for skilled, long-established Japanese confectionery. Cut in half, it seems to be melded with the red bean paste due to softness of the Gyuhi.

The perfect balance between the light texture of the gyuhi and the lightly sweet Ogura-an was so perfectly balanced that I devoured it in no time at all.
