Karukan Manju
Japanese notation "かるかん饅頭"
“Karukan Manju” is made by “Confectionery Workshop Tanyama” in Hioki City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Karukan is made mainly from karukan flour and yam. Karukan flour is a kind of rice flour, made by rinsing and cracking Uruchi rice and grinding it coarsely.
Karukan packages often have the Shimazu clan crest on them. This is because Karukan was served at a banquet for Tsunataka Shimazu in 1699, and is considered a confectionery with a strong connection to the Shimazu clan.
Karukan is a very traditional local confectionery with a history of more than 300 years, and is still popular among many people. In recent years, the manju type with azuki bean paste inside has become more common.
The transparent white karukan dough is filled with azuki red bean paste with a transparent texture.
The azuki red bean paste has a refreshing flavor that goes perfectly with the dough. Karukan, with its mysterious texture created from natural ingredients, is always simple and delicious, and it is no wonder that it has been loved for over 300 years.
