Kodawara

Bite-sized sponge cakes in the shape of a lucky child bale and a beckoning cat

“Kodawara” made by Ubuta-do in Kumano City, Mie Prefecture, is a bite-sized sponge cake using wasanbon. They were founded in 1962, and  is a long-established confectionery store that makes sweets using only domestically produced wheat and azuki beans.

The confectionery Ubuta-do seems to be named after the famous “Ubuta Shrine” in Kumano City. Ubuta Shrine has long been known as the god of easy delivery of childbirth and fertility.

Each package includes a lot of bite-sized sponge cakes. As the name suggests, there is a bale-shaped one and a “Maneki-neko” ,beckoning cat shaped one.

The shape of the Maneki-neko is well reproduced and it looks cute.

A small, moist and luxurious textured sponge cake. It was an elegant Castella with a delicious egg flavor and the light sweetness of Wasanbon.
